ONE SECOND OF LIGHT

By Giles Duley

A breathtaking collection of photographs that capture our shared humanity.

When I set out to make these photographs, it was with the intention to record the stories of others and to pass them on. I claim no ownership, but hopefully have been a good guardian. If one person sees a photograph, a story, in this book and that causes them to act on it, I've done my job.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Giles Duley was born in 1971 in London and is a Trustee at EMERGENCY UK. After 10 years as an editorial photographer in the fashion and music industries in both the US and Europe, Duley now focuses his work on humanitarian projects. His work has been exhibited and published worldwide in many respected publications including Vogue, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, The Sunday Times, The Observer and New Statesman.

Although documenting challenging, and at times, horrific situations, Duley captures the strength of those who fight their adversity rather than succumb. Duley visited EMERGENCY's Salam Centre in Sudan in 2010 and he has been involved with the organisation ever since. In 2011, while working in Afghanistan, Duley stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). He was severely injured, losing both legs and an arm.

ABOUT THE BOOK

At a time when images aimed at shocking us circulate widely over the internet, Duley's photographs focus on capturing the aspects of life that unite us rather than those that divide us. One Second Of Light is Duley's latest book, drawing upon his work from over the last decade, documenting the effects of conflict and humanitarian disaster. Everyday aspects of life are captured throughout the book, drawing us closer to the subjects photographed while reminding us of our shared humanity.

Giles' photos are simply true. A truth that originates from the simple fact that they do represent "la condition humaine", the many miseries and the few moments of joy that half of world's population experiences every day.

ABOUT  EMERGENCY

Since its creation in 1994, EMERGENCY has provided free, high quality medical and surgical care to 6.5 million people in countries affected by war, landmines and poverty. That's 1 patient every 2 minutes, for 21 years.

EMERGENCY repudiates the use of violence, terrorism and war as instruments to resolve disputes between individuals, peoples and nations while advocating for a world based on social justice, on solidarity, on reciprocal respect, on dialogue, and on an equal distribution of resources.

I have seen first-hand those whose lives have been saved by EMERGENCY. Eunice is a young girl from Kenya who I first met at the Salam Centre. Her heart was so diseased that she could hardly walk and was unable to attend school due to her fatigue. She was waiting for life saving open-heart surgery. When I saw her next, a couple of days later, she was like a different child. Without EMERGENCY she simply would not have had this second chance.
